Peter Vigue Announces Appointment of Design & Construction Industry Expert to Cianbro Board of Directors
Cianbro Chairman and CEO Peter Vigue is announcing the appointment of Norbert W. Young, Jr., to serve on Cianbro’s Board of Directors as an Outside Director and Special Advisor. “Norb is a world class businessman with a wealth of global experience,” says Vigue. “We are excited to bring Norb into our company, and feel that his knowledge and his many valuable contacts in the business world will prove to be indispensable assets for Cianbro as we move into the future.”
Mr. Young is currently the Managing Director of Duck Cove Associates, LLC (DCA), a Maine-based consulting services company. DCA provides strategic planning, business development, and business transformation services for growth-oriented clients. The company leverages Mr. Young’s 40 years of experience and understanding of the design and construction industries in the U.S. and internationally.
From 1999 until October, 2009, Young was president of the information and media business, McGraw-Hill Construction (MHC), comprising such prestigious brands as Dodge, Sweets, Architectural Record, Engineering News-Record, Regional Publications, and www.construction.com. MHC serves as the leading source of project news, product information, industry analysis and editorial coverage. MHC is the leading provider of print and electronic products and information services to the $5.2 trillion global industrial, commercial and residential construction industry.
Before McGraw-Hill, he spent eight years with the Bovis Construction Group, a global leader in the management of high profile construction projects. In 1994, he was appointed president for the newly created Bovis Management Systems (BMS), which was established to serve the construction and project management needs for both private and public sector clients on a national and global basis, with experience in over a dozen countries. Notable clients and projects which benefited from his involvement and oversight include the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, Bank of America, NYNEX (now Verizon) and Sun Microsystems.
During the 1980’s, Mr. Young was a partner at Toombs Development Company, New Canaan, Connecticut, where he managed all aspects of design and construction, including governmental permitting and approvals for the firm’s real estate developments in Philadelphia, Baltimore and New Jersey.
Young started his career in Philadelphia as an architect, where he practiced for 12 years, covering a wide range of commercial and institutional building types and projects. He holds a Master’s of Architecture, with distinction, from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor’s of Arts, cum laude, from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine.
He is a registered architect, with professional affiliations in The American Institute of Architects, the Urban Land Institute, the Construction Specification Institute and the Associated General Contractors of America Private Industry Advisory Board. He is also a member of the Construction Users Roundtable, a national organization of over 50 major owners focused on providing the “voice of the owner” to the design and construction industry. In addition, Mr. Young has served nine years as a trustee of the National Building Museum; chairman of the Board of Regents of the American Architectural Foundation.
Young is a Fellow of The American Institute of Architects and in 2005 he received the Edward C. Kemper Award from the AIA for outstanding service to the profession of architecture. He was elected to the National Academy of Construction in October 2008; and was designated an honorary Fellow by the Royal Architects Institute of Canada in June 2007. In 2007, Mr. Young received the prestigious Henry C. Michel Prize for Innovation from the American Society of Civil Engineers
He is very active in education-related initiatives by serving as vice chairman of the national ACE Mentor program, a high-school level program designed to identify and attract new talent to the design and construction industry. Additionally he serves on the Board of Overseers of his architecture alma mater, Penn Design. He is also a president of the Board of Trustees for his independent high school, Maine Central Institute, Pittsfield, Maine.
Mr. Young is an active speaker nationally covering such topics as construction economics, project delivery, risk management, and key trends impacting the industry such as interoperability, sustainability, productivity and globalization.
